Shopify lets AI agents finish the checkout. What changes for a store.
Since 28 September, AI agents working in a browser can review, change and place an order on a Shopify store, with the buyer’s authorisation and Shop Pay included. The next new channel arrives without an ad click.

On 28 September 2026 Shopify opened its checkout to browser-based AI agents. Until then an agent could search a store and fill a cart; now it can finish the purchase. Three new tools — get_checkout, update_checkout and complete_checkout — let it review a checkout, change the address or delivery option, and place the order once the buyer has authorised it. It is rolling out to all eligible merchants and includes Shop Pay.
It follows a year in which buying through AI changed shape: OpenAI stepped back from its in-chat Instant Checkout, according to Modern Retail, and products found in ChatGPT are usually bought on the merchant’s own store. Shopify’s move makes that last step something an agent can do for the shopper.
What it changes for a store
- A new source of orders that arrives without an ad click — so a channel report built on ad attribution will not see where it came from.
- The same costs on every order: goods, fees, shipping, returns. An agent does not change the margin of a sale, only how the sale arrived.
- Product data matters more: an agent reads titles, prices and stock, not the design of a page.
Worth checking now: whether your reports can tell an order placed by an agent from one that followed an ad — otherwise the agent’s sales end up credited to whatever ad ran last.
